WHAT IS BODY MUSIC?

Body Music, also known as Body Percussion and Body Drumming, is the oldest
music on the planet.  Before people were hollowing logs and slapping rocks,
they were using their bodies to stomp, clap, sing, snap and grunt their
musical ideas.  There are many traditional Body Musics in the world, from
African-American Hambone and Flamenco Palmas to Sumatran Saman and
Ethiopian Armpit music.  Keith Terry has developed a contemporary style of
Body Music based on his training as a jazz drummer, as well as his years of
intensive study and collaboration with world rhythmic systems.

BODY MUSIC WORKSHOP

Using the oldest instrument on the planet -- the human body -- we clap,
slap, snap, step and vocalize our way through some very fun and funky,
original and traditional rhythmic music.  Through the incorporation of rhythmic
devices often found in traditional sources -- polyrhythms, polymeters, crosspulses,
half-time/double-time, and phasing -- BODY MUSIC is an effective way of
internalizing rhythmic work, which enhances the development of time, timing,
phrasing, listening skills, independence, coordination and ensemble awareness.
It is a useful tool for musicians, dancers and movers of all kinds, actors, DJs and
film editors -- anyone interested in improving their rhythmic skills.  Wear comfortable
clothing and clean sneakers or jazz shoes.  No previous experience necessary.

KEITH TERRY is a percussionist/rhythm dancer/educator whose artistic vision has
straddled the line between music and dance for more than three decades.  As a soloist
he has appeared in such settings as Lincoln Center, Bumbershoot, NPRs All Things
Considered, the Vienna International Dance Festival and the Paradiso van Slag World
Drum Festival in Amsterdam.  As a band leader his groups SLAMMIN all-body band,
Crosspulse Percussion Ensemble, Professor Terry's Circus Band Extraordináire, and
Body Tjak (with I Wayan Dibia) have performed in a variety of venues including
Joe's Pub, WNYC, and Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors (NYC), Grand Performances,
LACMA Jazz, the Roxy, and the Skirball Center (LA), SFJazz, Vancouver Island
MusicFest, and the Bali Arts Festival.  In addition, Keith has performed with a wide
range of artists including Charles "Honi" Coles, Turtle Island String Quartet, Jovino
Santos Neto, Gamelan Sekar Jaya, Kenny Endo, Freddie Hubbard, Tex Williams,
Robin Williams and Bobby McFerrin. As a producer he has released 5 CDs and 3 DVDs
on Crosspulse Media. From 1998 to 2005 Keith was on the faculty at UCLA's Department
of World Arts and Cultures, where he designed and taught a dozen courses on the relationship
of music and dance; deep listening; synchronicity, time and timing; and intercultural
communication in the arts.  In 2006 he conceived and directed the first international
body music performance project for the Orff Institute in Salzburg with artists from Turkey,
Finland, Spain, Austria and the US.  Keith tours extensively in the Americas, Asia and Europe,
where his Body Music performances, workshops, residencies and choreographic commissions are
popular among professional performers and educators.  Keith Terry is the recipient of a 2008
Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Artistic Director of the International Body Music Festival,
which premiered 2008 in Oakland and San Francisco.   The 2nd IBMF will take place
1-6 December, 2009
